Basildon was a small village until 1949, when it was named a new town for Londoners moving out, taking in the old villages of Pitsea, Laindon and Vange. A brand-new town centre followed, and two of its landmarks, Maurice Lambert's Mother and Child fountain and the 14-storey Brooke House, are now listed. Fancy a stroll? Wat Tyler Country Park, opened in 1984, sits on the marshes south of Pitsea.

Plotland spirit, modern clear-outs

The loft in Vange that's been filling up since you moved in, or a shed in Pitsea full of things you'll never use: post the job for free. Licensed, insured local carriers send you quotes. You pay once your waste has been collected, and every job comes with a waste transfer note, kept in your account.
