On 1 August 1946, Stevenage became the first New Town. It was planned as six self-contained neighbourhoods of 10,000 to 12,000 people each, with a network of cycleways kept completely apart from the roads. The Old Town's historic High Street still links it to its past, and Fairlands Valley was laid out as parkland for everyone to enjoy.
