Hemel Hempstead has been here since at least the 8th century, and Henry VIII granted it a charter and a Thursday market in 1539. After the Second World War it was chosen as a new town, planned by architect Geoffrey Jellicoe, whose Water Gardens hold back the River Gade right in the centre. Drivers know it for the Magic Roundabout: six mini roundabouts joined in a ring.

Post-war homes, canal-side lives

Emptying one of the first new-town houses in Adeyfield, or clearing a canal-side home near Apsley Marina before you move on? Post the job for free and licensed, insured local carriers send you quotes. You pay once your waste has been collected, and every job comes with a waste transfer note, kept in your account.
