Bedford grew up at a ford on the River Great Ouse and served the farms around it as a market town from the early Middle Ages. From the 16th century it was one of the main centres of England's lace-making. The river still runs right through the town centre, lined with the gardens of the Embankment, and Priory Country Park stretches along its northern bank on the east side of town.
