Mattress disposal

• Buying a new one? Some retailers offer to take the old mattress away when they deliver. Ask before you order.
• Your council’s bulky waste collection, if you can wait and leave it outside.
• Your council’s recycling centre, if it fits in your car.
• A collector through scrapmarket, on a day you agree, from inside if you need.

Whoever takes it must be allowed to: if you give it to someone who isn’t a registered waste carrier and it’s dumped, you can be fined. Book through scrapmarket and that check is done for you. If you hire someone yourself, check their licence first.

Mattresses aren’t covered by the POPs rules that apply to sofas, so they don’t have to be incinerated. Where it ends up depends on the site, and your waste transfer note shows which site took it.

Keep it dry and in one piece until it’s collected. Some councils won’t take a wet mattress, and a dry one is easier to deal with.

The law makes you responsible for who takes your waste. On scrapmarket, that’s handled.
