Telford began life in 1963 as Dawley New Town, and in 1968 it was renamed after the engineer Thomas Telford. The new town took in older places such as Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Ironbridge Gorge, now a World Heritage Site, where Abraham Darby pioneered smelting iron with coke in 1709. Above it all rises The Wrekin, the area's best-known hill.
Forging ahead, leaving the clutter
