Gloucester began as the Roman Glevum, set up around AD 48 at a crossing of the River Severn and made a colonia in 97. It sits between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the west, and it's still an inland port: the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal links its docks to the Severn Estuary. Look out for the cathedral, which has appeared in the Harry Potter films.

Unloading more than the docks

A house near the rugby ground in Kingsholm, or a 20th-century semi in Longlevens with a loft that's run out of room: post the job for free, and licensed, insured local carriers send you quotes. You pay once your waste has been collected, and every job comes with a waste transfer note, kept in your account.

Good causes, Severn-side
