Guildford's name is thought to come from a ford over the River Wey, and the town did well out of the wool trade before Henry VII granted it a charter in 1488. Its High Street is still paved with granite setts, and Henry III once kept a royal home at the Norman castle. Step outside and the Surrey Hills wrap round the town on three sides.
