Woking grew up around its station, where the first train from Nine Elms arrived on 12 May 1838. In 1854 the London Necropolis Company bought 2,268 acres for Brookwood Cemetery and sold its spare land for housing, which helped the town spread. Before all that, the Basingstoke Canal, completed in 1794, had helped brickmaking at Knaphill and plant nurseries at Mayford to grow.

Invaded by clutter? Fight back

A loft in Knaphill, a garage in Goldsworth Park or a whole house in Byfleet before a move: the job costs nothing to post, and licensed, insured local carriers send you quotes. You pay once your waste has been collected, and every job comes with a waste transfer note, kept in your account.

Quietly getting on with it

20% of what we earn on every job goes to good causes in your local area. Locally, look at The Lightbox, the art gallery and museum on Chobham Road, and Woking & Sam Beare Hospice, which gives palliative and end-of-life care across North West Surrey. They're examples of the kind of local causes the programme is for. Find out more about our 20% pledge
