Hastings gave its name to the battle of 1066, though it was fought a few miles away at Senlac Hill. The Old Town sits in a sheltered valley between the East and West Hills, with the castle ruins up above, and the fishing boats are still launched straight off the beach: it's the UK's largest beach-based fleet. Later, the town spread west to meet elegant St Leonards.
