Sunderland's story starts in 674, when Benedict Biscop founded St Peter's monastery on the north bank of the River Wear. The river went on to build the town: between 1846 and 1854 almost a third of the UK's ships were built here, and in 1850 the Sunderland Herald called it the greatest shipbuilding port in the world. It became a city in 1992.

Launch day for the back bedroom

Big job or small, a wardrobe in Fulwell, a back yard in Hendon or a garage in Southwick, posting it costs nothing, and licensed, insured local carriers send you quotes. You pay once your waste has been collected, and every job comes with a waste transfer note, kept in your account.

Glass half full, always

20% of what we earn on every job goes to good causes in your local area. Around the Wear, think of the Foundation of Light, which uses football to open up learning and opportunities, Sunderland Culture, which runs the city's museums, galleries and the National Glass Centre, and Sunderland Counselling Service, with its talking therapies: the kind of local causes the programme is for.
