Newcastle began as Pons Aelius, a Roman settlement by a bridge over the Tyne, named after the emperor Hadrian, and took its name from the castle Robert Curthose built in 1080. In the 1830s Richard Grainger and John Dobson gave it a grand neoclassical centre, and it became one of the world's great shipbuilding cities. Need some air? The Town Moor, just north of the centre, is bigger than Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath put together.
