Middlesbrough grew almost from nothing. In 1830 a new coal port opened on the south bank of the Tees, with a settlement built on Middlesbrough farm for its workers, and by the mid-1870s the town made a third of the country's pig iron, earning the name Ironopolis. Its Tees Transporter Bridge is the longest transporter bridge still standing anywhere in the world.

Built on iron, buried in boxes
