Birkenhead looks across the River Mersey at Liverpool, and monks were running a ferry from here as early as 1150. In the 19th century steam ferries and shipbuilding turned the quiet headland into a busy port, and the growing town laid out the grand terraces of Hamilton Square and the green sweep of Birkenhead Park. Britain's first street tramway ran here too.
