St Helens sits on the South Lancashire Coalfield, and plenty of coal, good local sand and salt from nearby Cheshire made it a glassmaking town. The Sankey Canal, opened in 1757, carried its coal to Liverpool. Pilkington, founded here in 1826, still makes glass in the town, and on the old Sutton Manor Colliery site stands Dream, a 20-metre white head of a young woman with her eyes closed.
