Castle Bromwich recycling centre: opening times, booking and what it takes
Castle Bromwich recycling centre is on Tameside Drive, near Castle Vale in the north-east of Birmingham. It’s one of the city’s five tips, all run by Veolia for the council.
Right now it’s the only one of the five you can drive into without booking, as long as you come by car.

This centre is run by Veolia, for Birmingham City Council, not scrapmarket. Check the council’s page before you go.

Before you go
No booking for cars at the moment. The council has turned off car bookings here while the bin strike lasts. Vans and large trailers still need a van booking, and everyone needs proof of address.
HS2 works around Castle Bromwich can slow the roads to the site, so allow extra time.

Opening times
| When | Days | Open |
|---|---|---|
| During the bin strike | Monday to Friday | 7am to 9pm |
| During the bin strike | Saturday, Sunday | 8am to 6pm |
The council and Veolia give the same hours for all five Birmingham centres, and both call them extended hours for the bin strike. Neither says what the hours will be once it ends, and no last entry time is published.
Bank holiday hours aren’t published. Last Christmas the centres closed only on Christmas Day and Boxing Day; Christmas 2026 hasn’t been announced yet.

Booking and proof of address
In a car, you can turn up during opening hours: the car booking system is switched off here for the strike. Bring proof that you live in Birmingham: a driving licence, a council tax bill or a utility bill, on paper or on your phone. Without it you won’t be let in.
A van, a minibus or a trailer bigger than 6ft by 4ft still needs a van booking, made at least 2 hours and up to 7 days ahead. You can hold two bookings at a time.
From the council’s pages, checked 9 October 2026. Sources are at the end of the page.
Vans, trailers and the height barrier
Vans, minibuses and trailers over 6ft by 4ft come in on a van booking. A hire van is fine: put “Hire Van” if you don’t know the registration yet, and bring the hire papers with your proof of address. No commercial vehicles are let in, and van visits can’t bring asbestos, tree trunks, plaster, or large amounts of soil or rubble.
The height limit is 2.1 metres. A taller van should book Tyseley, which has no barrier.

What it takes and what it refuses
| Item | Takes it? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sofas and armchairs | Yes | Veolia lists sofas and upholstered furniture as bulky waste it takes. It doesn’t say whether they go in a container of their own, so ask the staff. |
| Mattresses | Yes | |
| Fridges and freezers | Yes | |
| Plasterboard | Not stated | Not on Veolia’s lists for car visits, either way. Van bookings can’t bring plaster. |
| Rubble and soil | Limited | Up to eight 25kg bags, or the same amount loose, a visit. Not in large amounts on a van booking. |
| Tyres | Limited | Up to five car tyres, on or off the rim. |
| Asbestos | Limited | Cement-bonded asbestos from your own home only, double-wrapped with a clear outer layer. Never on a van booking. |
| Trade waste | No | Including a landlord’s waste, a builder’s, or a house you’re clearing that isn’t yours. |
Also taken: garden waste, wood, metal, glass, cardboard, carpets, electricals, paint, oil, batteries, textiles and gas bottles. Veolia says each centre has a donation area for things worth reusing.
The council’s pages don’t say whether DIY waste is charged; see the council’s page.

Can’t get a slot, no van, or it won’t take it?
Post the job with a few photos and checked, licensed collectors quote to take it away. You choose, and you pay once it’s gone.
On every job we check the collector’s licence, insurance and ID, record their number plate and where your waste is going before it leaves, issue your waste transfer note, and pay them only once we’ve seen proof it was disposed of legally.

- Bring proof of address even without a booking: it’s checked at the gate.
- Sort black bags first: staff may ask you to take out the recycling.
- Parking here is side-on to the containers, Veolia says.
- Coming in a van taller than 2.1 metres? Book Tyseley instead.
