Tyseley recycling centre: opening times, booking and what it takes
Tyseley recycling centre on James Road, in the east of Birmingham, is the city’s only tip without a height barrier. That makes it the one to book for a high-top van.
It also has the Reuse Shop, run with Community Reuse, selling donated furniture, bikes, electricals and tools.
Checked on 9 October 2026
This centre is run by Veolia, for Birmingham City Council, not scrapmarket. Check the council’s page before you go.

Opening times
| When | Days | Open |
|---|---|---|
| During the bin strike | Monday to Friday | 7am to 9pm |
| During the bin strike | Saturday, Sunday | 8am to 6pm |
The tip’s hours are the strike-time ones Birmingham’s centres all keep. The council and Veolia agree on them, but say they’re extended for the strike, with nothing on the hours afterwards and no last entry time.
The Reuse Shop has its own hours: Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm, and weekends 9am to 4pm, and you don’t need to book to shop there.
Bank holidays aren’t covered. In 2025 the centres closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day only.

Booking and proof of address
Book a slot for every tip visit: on the car form up to 6 days ahead, or the van form up to 7 days ahead, at least 2 hours before. Two bookings at a time is the limit, and each is one visit.
You’ll need to show a Birmingham address on a driving licence, council tax bill or utility bill. A visit to the Reuse Shop alone needs no booking.

Vans, trailers and the height barrier
With no barrier, Tyseley takes vans of any height that the van booking allows: a Luton or a high-top hire van included, if you bring the hire papers. Minibuses and trailers over 6ft by 4ft book as vans too. Commercial vehicles are refused.
What a van visit can’t bring is the same here as elsewhere in the city: asbestos, tree trunks, plaster, or large amounts of soil or rubble.

What it takes and what it refuses
| Item | Takes it? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sofas and armchairs | Yes | Yes, as bulky waste. If it’s in good shape, the Reuse Shop sells donated furniture, so ask whether it can go there instead. |
| Mattresses | Yes | |
| Fridges and freezers | Yes | |
| Plasterboard | Not stated | Not on Veolia’s lists for car visits, either way. Van bookings can’t bring plaster. |
| Rubble and soil | Limited | Up to eight 25kg bags, or the same amount loose, a visit. Not in large amounts on a van booking. |
| Tyres | Limited | Up to five car tyres, on or off the rim. |
| Asbestos | Limited | Cement-bonded asbestos from your own home only, double-wrapped with a clear outer layer. Never on a van booking. |
| Trade waste | No | Including a landlord’s waste, a builder’s, or a house you’re clearing that isn’t yours. |
Also taken: garden waste, wood, metal, glass, cardboard, carpets, electricals and TVs, paint, oils, batteries, books and textiles. The Reuse Shop is on the left as you come through the main gates, with its own parking.
The council’s pages don’t say whether DIY waste is charged; see the council’s page.

Can’t get a slot, no van, or it won’t take it?
Post the job with a few photos and checked, licensed collectors quote to take it away. You choose, and you pay once it’s gone.
On every job we check the collector’s licence, insurance and ID, record their number plate and where your waste is going before it leaves, issue your waste transfer note, and pay them only once we’ve seen proof it was disposed of legally.
