Coventry recycling centre (Bar Road): opening times, booking and what it takes

Coventry has one tip: the Household Recycling and Disposal Centre on Bar Road, off London Road, beside the city’s energy-from-waste plant. The Coventry & Solihull Waste Disposal Company runs both for the council.

It’s for Coventry residents only, and every visit is booked.

Checked on 9 October 2026

This centre is run by the Coventry & Solihull Waste Disposal Company, for Coventry City Council, not scrapmarket. Check the council’s page before you go.

The council’s tip pages don’t give opening hours; these are from the company that runs the site. Summer runs from 1 April to 30 September and winter from 1 October to 31 March.

The tip is closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 January, and the council says it opens on every other bank holiday. Nothing is published for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, and there’s no last entry time.

Booking and proof of address

Book online through Coventry City Council’s MyAccount, giving your address, what you’re bringing and the vehicle registration. For a hire van you can put “HIRE” and add the registration later. You get a reference number to quote at the gate. Don’t arrive more than 10 minutes early, or you may be sent away to come back.

Bring proof of address, printed or on screen: a recent utility bill, a council tax bill or a driving licence. Staff ask you to hold it up to the closed car window. If the waste isn’t from your own address, the person it belongs to has to come with you.

Vans, trailers and the height barrier

There’s no van permit: a van is booked like any other vehicle, within size limits. Transit-type vans and pick-ups up to 5.25 metres long are allowed, without a trailer; long-wheelbase, twin-axle and over-3.5-tonne vehicles aren’t. A car can tow a small trailer. The two sources give different maximum trailer lengths, so check the council’s vehicle page before you hitch one up.

On height, the council says nothing over 2.05 metres, and small vans no taller than 1.9 metres. The operator describes a 1.7 metre barrier, with an intercom at the road blocker for taller non-commercial vehicles, and a 2.1 metre maximum. Staff won’t help you unload, and cameras read number plates at the entrance.

Can’t get a slot, no van, or it won’t take it?

Post the job with a few photos and checked, licensed collectors quote to take it away. You choose, and you pay once it’s gone.

On every job we check the collector’s licence, insurance and ID, record their number plate and where your waste is going before it leaves, issue your waste transfer note, and pay them only once we’ve seen proof it was disposed of legally.
