Sofa removal in Wolverhampton

An old sofa in a semi in Tettenhall or a flat in Wednesfield? Post a photo, say where it is, and licensed collectors we’ve checked will quote to take it away.

We record who takes it and where it’s going before it leaves, and you pay only once it’s gone.

Wolverhampton has 557 registered upper-tier waste carriers on the Environment Agency public register.

What we do on every job

The law makes you responsible for who takes your waste. Book through scrapmarket and the checks and the paperwork are done for you:

  • We check the collector’s waste carrier licence on the Environment Agency register before they can quote, and again every night. If it lapses, they can’t quote.
  • We check their insurance, and their photo ID against a selfie.
  • When they collect, they record their van’s registration and the licensed site your waste is going to.
  • Your waste transfer note is made for you when you confirm the collection, and kept in your account.
  • We pay the collector only once we’ve reviewed proof that your waste got to that site.
  • If your waste is ever fly-tipped anyway, we’ll report the collector to the Environment Agency and the council, and cover any fine. Here’s how that works.

The council’s bulky item collection

City of Wolverhampton Council runs its own bulky item collection, and it’s taking bookings. You book online through your council account, pick from the slots released each day, and there’s a charge. General items are collected Monday to Thursday, depending on where you live.

The sofa has to be outside by 6.30am on the day, at the point nearest the road. The crew won’t come into the house, a back garden or a flat, and won’t carry anything up or down steps. A corner sofa that comes apart counts as one item per section, up to nine items a visit. Anything soaked may be refused, and so may an item over 2 metres long or too heavy for the two-person crew to lift.

Recycling centres near Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton has two tips, both run by the council and open 8am to 4pm every day. They take furniture, and you don’t need to book if you come by car. Bring photo ID that shows you live in Wolverhampton.

A van, a pick-up or a car with a trailer needs a Tip Visit booked first, with two forms of ID: one with a photo, and a recent household bill.

  • Shaw Road, Wolverhampton, WV10 9LE

Its donation point won’t take soft furnishings, so a sofa can’t go to reuse here.

Keep it dry, and keep it apart

The council asks for soft furnishings to be kept dry before a bulky collection, because they get heavy when wet, and its crews won’t take anything soaked. A sofa left out in the rain can mean a wasted booking.

Neither the tips page nor the bulky collection pages say whether the tips keep a separate container for upholstered seating. The national rule is that it’s kept apart from other waste and incinerated, so if you take a sofa yourself, ask the staff where it goes.

Why sofas need a proper collector

Old sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seats may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals once used as flame retardants. In England they must be destroyed by incineration. They can’t go to landfill or be recycled, and they should be kept apart from other waste.

The rules cover sofa beds, armchairs, footstools, futons, bean bags, large cushions and upholstered dining, kitchen and office chairs too. Mattresses, beds and curtains aren’t covered.

When your job includes a sofa, we tell your collector to keep it separate in the van and take it to a site that sends it for incineration. Your waste transfer note records it as POPs waste.

Can it be reused?

If it’s in good condition, a furniture charity or reuse shop may take it. Most ask for the fire safety label to still be attached, so check before you book anything.

If you hire someone yourself

You’d need to make the checks on your own: look up their licence on the Environment Agency register (our free checker does it in seconds), note their van registration, ask where your waste is going, and keep a waste transfer note. Through scrapmarket, that’s all done for you.

Questions

Will the council collect a sofa?
Yes: its bulky item collection takes sofas (its terms use a corner sofa as an example). You book online and pay, and it must be outside by 6.30am, near the road. If it needs carrying out of the house, post it on scrapmarket and say so in the access notes.
What do I need to take a sofa to the tip?
Photo ID showing you live in Wolverhampton. By car you can just turn up between 8am and 4pm. In a van, a pick-up or with a trailer, book a Tip Visit first and bring two forms of ID, one with a photo and one a recent household bill.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily. When you post, say how easy it is to reach and add any access notes, then agree the details with your collector by message. Afterwards you confirm the collection in your account, and that’s when you’re charged.
Can it be collected from inside, or upstairs?
Say so when you post. Mention stairs, narrow doors, parking or anything that needs taking apart in the access notes, so collectors can quote for it.
What if my waste is fly-tipped?
We take all the steps to catch any cowboy collectors. Their licence, insurance and ID are checked before they can quote, their number plate and the waste centre your collection is going to are recorded before your waste leaves, and they’re only paid once we’ve seen proof of legal disposal. If anything went wrong, we’d report them to the Environment Agency and the council, and cover any fines you incur. The details are in our Terms.
