Leicester began as the Roman town of Ratae beside the River Soar, and you can still see what is left of its Roman baths at the Jewry Wall. Victorian Leicester made stockings and shoes, and it became a city in 1919. Its most famous resident turned up in 2012, when Richard III was found under a car park; he was reburied in the cathedral in 2015.
